Betty O’Donoghue Foundation
Betty O’Donoghue taught League classes for over 50 years and was passionate about the
physical and emotional benefits of exercise and the importance of staying active, no
matter how old one is.
She also believed that exercise classes should be available to all, irrespective of race and affordability.
The Betty O’Donoghue Foundation (The Foundation) was established in 2019 to continue Betty’s commitment to the Fitness League in South Africa.
The main objective of The Foundation is to establish classes in lower resourced
areas, and train new FLExercise teachers from less privileged backgrounds. These
new classes will grow FLExercise and provide for women that have historically been
less catered for. In most cases, these new classes will start as non-fee paying
classes with The Foundation paying the teacher and venue.
The Foundation will also provide a space for information-sharing and creative
thinking, and look at ways for teachers in different parts of South Africa to engage
with each other and share ideas. Marketing FLExercise is also important to enable
the organisation to grow and offer its services to a wider range of people. Therefore,
the Foundation will aim to raise the profile of FLExercise.
In order to support the Foundation’s work, fundraising will occur on a regular basis.
The Foundation’s four Ordinary members constitute the Committee and represent
the Fitness League, Extend and Betty’s family. Honorary members are existing
FLExercise teachers, donors and individuals interested in supporting the
Foundation.
